Upcoming EventsSAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Culture at the Crossroads: Evening of Bosnian Sevdah and Dance Friday, May 7, 2010 8:00PM Croatian American Cultural Center 60 Onondaga Avenue San Francisco, CA 94112 This evening will feature sevdalinke by Bosnian performers now residing in the San Francisco Bay Area. The performers are Muhamed Kocan, Rasima Alisic Klisturic, and Hajrudin Hajric. They will be joined by Mary Sherhart. The band will include: Dzevad Zeric - accordion, Dzenan Gacanovic - key board and arrangments, and Fahir Crnojevic - guitar. The Bosnian dance ensemble, Mladost Bosne, will perform. There will be traditional food and dancing. Muhamed Kocan began singing sevdalinke in his native Karlovac, Croatia, at the age of seven. His home was filled with the beautiful voice of his mother who instilled in him an enduring love of sevdah and music of all kinds. Mr. Kocan won numerous first place awards throughout former Yugoslavia where he appeared with many renowned artists including Halid Beslic, Hanka Paldum and Serif Konjic. In the US, Mr. Kocan was one of 7 finalists in the “Stars of Bostel” competition, appeared in the 2009 St Louis Sevdah Days Festival, and serves on the board of Sevdah North America. He has a unique way of communicating his love for sevdah which makes him a special favorite among audiences.
Mary Sherhart is one of America's leading artists in Balkan singing and one of the few non-native artists to be recognized and loved by ethnic audiences. She is a recipient of the 2006 Artist Trust / Washington State Arts Commission Fellowship. She is the first president of Sevdah North America, a nonprofit educational organization formed to promote and preserve the traditional urban music of Bosnia and Herzegovina. During June, 2006, she toured with the late Omer Pobric and singers from the 'Sevdah Institute Omer Pobric,' to major diaspora communities throughout the United States. Mary had the honor of opening the 2005 Festival of Sevdalinke at the Bascarsija Nights Festival in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Mladost Bosne is a Bosnian folkdancing youth ensemble from San Jose area. Their aim is to learn, preserve and present authentic Bosnian cultural heritage including folk dances from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since 2005 they have performed before Bosnian and American audiences in the Bay Area, Sacramento,Boise, and Seattle, including annual performances at Bay Area Cultural Connections Festivals and the San Francisco's World Arts West festival auditions in 2009 ST LOUIS, MISSOURI
